Unfortunately, I've found that a beastmaster is a build that suffers greatly from the mid-level syndrome (of not having quite enough of everything yet to make it really worthwhile). However, if you're interested in a Beastmaster the same advice I'd give an end-gamer is what I would give you.
First, invest in beast mastery like you would in your weapon attribute. You don't expect to do damage with your bow while at 0 marksmanship, so don't expect your pet to be useful at low beast mastery.
Second, expertise is your friend. If you can afford it, it will help with skill spamming and thus up your damage.
Third, the skills you should equip (as soon as you get them if you haven't gotten them yet): are Comfort Animal (to res your pet quickly and efficiently), Disrupting Lunge (nice damage as well as an interrupt), Ferocious Strike (elite, so not likely to be gotten until much later, but a beautiful damage dealer + energy management), and Call of Protection (makes your pet a very formidable tank) and/or Call of Haste.
Lastly, just try to learn as much as you can about how the pet works. Understanding its AI, or why some things about it are the way they are will go a long ways towards you becoming a successful beast master.
Edit: ...with the rest of the post not cut off. o.O
